Kiln formed glass
90 x 220 x 145mm
Shroud explores an experience of space through the lens of architectural phenomenology: how the body recognises the atmospheric, often intangible qualities of space. Black glass evokes the qualities of shadow, volume and void in architecture, which are the qualities in architecture that I am drawn to for their ambiguity and mystery. The object materialises these qualities and experiences on a dioramic scale.
The sheet glass took its form autonomously, responding in its own way to the mold and the environment in the kiln. The resulting object echoes the subtle memory of the mold, as well as embodies the spatial tensions experienced through the body when in space: between shadow and light, the physical and intangible, lightness and weight, moment and memory, movement and stillness.
Shroud was awarded the Aldo Bellini Acquisition Prize as part of the Milano Vetro-35 (Edition IV), Biennial of International Artistic and Design Glass Competition. It is permanently displayed at the Castello di Sforzesco in Milan.
